NARRATIVE POLITICS

HOW POLITICS IS MADE WITH STORY

New narratives are sought everywhere: between right-wing populist backward narratives, technophile Silicon Valley utopias and culture-critical dystopias, societies are looking for inclusive narratives to build momentum among the multiple crisis of our times. Our “Narrative Politics” series provides a space for exploring the role of story in politics and discuss key questions of our time.

The series is a free offering. Depending on who is participating it will be in German, English or both with translation. The individual sessions take place virtually. You can register here for the series and we will provide your with the information for each session a week ahead of time.

Opinions - Stories - Narratives. A Model for the staging of political discourse

26.09.2022 | 16:45 – 18:00 CET

On the surface, political debate is the exchange of opinions, arguments and facts. Taking a closer look, we see that the stage for this is itself constituted by beliefs and narratives that determine discussions and opinion-forming much more than arguments. Based on the model of "political staging", we want to discuss the different levels of political narratives and how they influence each other and the public debate.

21.11.2022 | 18:00 – 19:30 CET

Every society and the people in it are "enmeshed in stories": We become what we are by positioning ourselves in "social narratives", that is, in a social space of stories. And also being positioned in stories by others. This means that social narratives play a decisive role in determining who we are, how we act and what we think. We will discuss these approaches to narratives in the public sphere with an expert.
